What to consider when travelling in winter

An easier way to plan off-season getaways

Published: 2025

When people talk about travelling in winter, they almost always think of snow, ski resorts and ski trips. However, winter offers many more possibilities for those looking for a quiet getaway, away from crowds and without relying on rigid plans or a single type of experience.

Travelling in winter can also mean strolling calmly along the coast, discovering villages without the crowds or exploring a city at a different pace, without rush or overcrowding.

When travelling off-season, aspects such as the location of the accommodation, room comfort or the level of service become more important. In winter, you spend more time at the hotel, and having a comfortable, well-managed space makes the difference between a pleasant getaway and a disappointing experience.

At Dynamic Hotels, where we work with travellers all year round and offer accommodation designed for different types of getaways, we’ve put together a series of practical tips to help you plan your winter trip more thoughtfully.

Accommodation matters more than the destination

In winter, accommodation stops being just a place to sleep and becomes part of the trip itself. Daylight hours are shorter, the weather encourages a slower pace, and it’s common to spend more time at the hotel than at other times of the year.

That’s why, when travelling off-season, choosing where to stay is even more important than the destination itself. A good location, comfortable rooms and a well-maintained environment can make the difference between a pleasant getaway and an uncomfortable experience.

Details such as proper heating, good rest and having shared spaces where you can relax become especially important in winter. Service also matters more than ever: when plans change or something unexpected happens, having an approachable and helpful team really makes a difference.

Choose destinations that don’t rely on a single plan

When travelling in winter, it’s best to choose destinations that offer more than just one main activity. Places that only work if the weather is good or if a specific activity is available can easily become frustrating when things don’t go as planned.

This flexibility becomes even more important when travelling as a group, whether with friends, family, or as part of a sports or professional team. In winter, not everyone has the same pace or energy every day, and relying on a single plan can make the getaway less comfortable.

Instead, destinations that combine surroundings, services and alternatives allow you to adapt better to the season. Walking along the coast even when it’s not beach season, enjoying the mountains without necessarily skiing, or exploring a city at a slower pace are plans that work well when organising a group stay.

You don’t travel with the same schedule as in summer

Travelling in the low season means accepting that your schedule won’t be the same as in summer. In some destinations, especially large cities like Barcelona, this difference is barely noticeable, as cultural, gastronomic and leisure options remain active all year round.

However, in smaller or nearby destinations, especially coastal or inland areas (in Caldes de Estrac, we have a good example), there can be significant changes. Reduced opening hours, seasonal activities or services that only operate during certain months are part of the winter reality and should be considered before travelling.

This doesn’t mean there are fewer options, but rather that it’s advisable to check in advance what’s available and adapt your trip to what the destination offers at that time of year. Simple planning helps avoid unnecessary travel and allows you to enjoy the surroundings more calmly.

Prices change, but not everything is worth it

One of the reasons many people choose to travel in winter is price. Outside the high season, costs are usually lower and it’s possible to find accommodation and getaways at a more reasonable price than at other times of the year.

However, travelling cheaper shouldn’t mean giving up comfort. In winter, aspects such as proper heating, good rest and the level of service matter more than ever, and choosing solely based on price can end up being costly.

That’s why, when planning a winter trip, it’s important to look at the value for money and what the stay actually includes. Well-managed accommodation, prepared for this time of year and offering services suited to the climate, makes all the difference—even on a tight budget.

Service makes an even bigger difference

When the weather doesn’t cooperate and plans don’t go as expected, service becomes key. A change in weather, a cancelled activity or modified opening hours can affect the experience, and it’s in these moments that the quality of service really shows.

A hotel may be simple, but if the team is available, communicates clearly and is committed to making the stay comfortable, the overall perception of the trip improves significantly.

Having staff who know the destination well, suggest alternatives and adapt to guests’ needs brings peace of mind and helps avoid frustration. It’s not about grand gestures, but about honest, approachable service that makes day-to-day travel easier.

That’s why, when choosing accommodation for a winter getaway, it’s worth prioritising places where service isn’t an add-on, but a core part of the experience. That often invisible detail is what turns an ordinary stay into a genuinely pleasant one.
